Civil Engineers have not yet been eliminated, and neither have programmers, but stockbrokers have. Stockbrokers have been eliminated for all but those that do not wish to control their own destiny. To use a broker to either purchase stock for you, or to manage your account is exorbantly expensive. You can trade a million shares for $7.00 on the Internet. Why pay more?

Programmers will be eliminated soon though, just as have stockbrokers, as easier and easier to use programming languages become available.
