Mar$, re: "And you didn't respond to my suggestion that Turkey could be used as a template for trying to help guide Iraq into a modern parliamentary system of representation for the people of Iraq."

Yes, I guess I did. Didn't Turkey evolve to it's current state of governance over decades without armed intervention by foreign forces intent on remaking Turkey? How many Turkish women, children and unarmed men had to die at the hands of the "helpers" before the Turks recognized the value of a parliamentary form of government? Was empowering a majority of the Turks a mortal threat to a significant minority of the population? What am I missing here? Maybe you can tell me?

"We know that atrocities were commited there, millions have died in recent wars between Iran and Iraq ...and yet the world should stand around and do nothing."

Are you kidding? What could the world have done to prevent the Iran/Iraq war with the US as a behind the scenes sponsor of the Iraqi war effort? How could the world prevent atrocities by rogue governments? How are we doing in the Sudan? How many lives have we "saved" in Iraq with the tens of thousands of Iraqis newly dead in the conflict and many more dead because of the almost total lack of security? And then there's that troublesome, simmering civil war that we're in the middle of, isn't there?

Whatever it is that should be done to prevent internal atrocities; invading, dismantling institutions of governance and trying to remake ancient cultures and societies seemingly ain't it.

Adults should recognize the limits of their government's power long before they send their children to die. Ed
