Tommaso,
Thomas Gold was the most respected western proponent of the abiotic origin of oil. Dr. Gold was a prominent astrophysicist who was the first to correctly surmise the existence of pulsars, among many other achievements
. blackwellpublishing.com

Gold's position was that his theory was ridiculed because too many powerful entities relied on the "myth" of finite oil to keep prices up.
No other establishment geologist has embraced this theory but it is an interesting one and if you read Gold's "The Deep, Hot Biosphere" you will find it well thought out. Being well thought out does not make a theory true and this one may not be, but it is a very interesting idea that changed my perception of the planet and opened my mind to the reality that things are not always as they seem.
