You said yourself that your two guys were compensated equally.

Yes, with only the form of the compensation differening, and in that example everyone is falling all over themselves with advice for the guy with all the fish to dispose of it so he can pay his rent. That pretty much proves that it is not the amount or the agreement but the form of the payment, especially the way the two forms of payment differ over time, that is making a major difference in the outcome for these two guys.
