First of all, he agreed to the form of payment. It was part of the employment contract.

especially the way the two forms of payment differ over time, that is making a major difference in the outcome for these two guys.

If the the forms of compensation differ over time disadvantaging one, then it behooves the fish guy to convert his fish into something more durable. I said that before. There are a few choices here. Either don't agree to compensation in fish in the first place, convert the fish to silver upon delivery, or quit your bellyaching, I say. I don't see how this is society's problem.
