U.S. regulators put ViroPharma drug on fast-track

CHICAGO, Feb 7 (Reuters) - ViroPharma Inc. (VPHM.O: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Tuesday U.S. regulators have granted fast-track status to a drug designed to prevent a herpes-like virus in certain transplant patients.

The drug, maribavir, is designed to prevent cytomegalovirus, or CMV, a member of the herpes virus group, which includes the viruses that cause chicken pox, mononucleosis, cold sores and genital herpes.
