Sometimes you need the prereqs for democracy first. The results you get from democracy in the mideast produced the new iranian pres, hamas and the iraqi tribal result. Sometimes its better to get benign dictators first who during their rule do create the prereqs--examples are Attaturk, DeGaulle. The problem with westerners of all political stripes is that we dont look at history as a lt thing like many asians do. We bleed for every injustice anywhere and everywhere and are unable to see advances as advances in certain places because our democracy/minority rights mantra is not always followed. That was one of the problems in Vietnam where we put our democracy model up in oppostion to what was more than anything else a nationalist movement. Democracy had little gravitas over there at that time and even the folks we put in power reverted to authoritarianism when it suited their needs. All this talk of democracy/western style should be replaced with freedome and self determination for nations and we should not be nearly as judgemental as we always are. That goes for the right and the left. mike
