Just because it's convenient and useful to them to frame the opposition that way doesn't mean that they don't believe that the opposition is "not serious." I have not seen anything to make me think that they don't believe 1)that terrorism is serious business and 2)that the left finds it unserious. It seems to me that there is this huge split in the way people view the threat, that neither side can relate to the other, and both sides are caricaturing the opposition out of lack of understanding and respect. That it may be politically useful to do so is just icing on the cake, not just a shallow political power play.
