Lorne,
Substitute Russia under Stalin for the islamofascists and look how over 40+ years we staved off a nuclear war. Now for the folks living in subjugation this was not cool but for the US we did not have to go to nuke war. The Cuban Missile Crisis might have been the most important moment in world history as far as i am concerned.
Now fast forward to today and try to apply the lessons of the cold war to the current coldish war.
1. divide and conquer as in the sino soviet conflict. How about splitting iran and sunni wahabi al quaeda? Hitler/Stalin alliance couldnt last and neither could sino-soviet pact Personally i have believed that iran can be dealt with and should never have been put in the axis of evil although evil they are. Al Quaeda and the wahabis from pakistand and SA worry me the most. In the end they may have to go but it would be nice to have iran and some other arab states on our side, maybe even doing some of the fighting.
2. separate out Tito like muslim movements and regimes even ifnot perfect from the al quaeda/iran variety. Hamas is not al quaeda nor is it shiaa.
3. Recognize that not all peoples will be winners in this 40 year war. Israel must take into account US interests as well as their own, so if a workable peace is rammed down the throats of both arabs and jews so be it as long as it is honored. And if the US can extricate itself from iraq, hopefully with some success perhaps ultimately it must be US troops that will be needed to insure the peace. If the pals want to shoot at US those will be the last shots fired.
4. Alliances with our friends the euros--they havent been overrun (yet). France is particularly vulnerable to a US partnership as they have discovered that Reality bites more than a few macdonald hamburger stands in paris.
5. Assymetric warfare of our own including things as diverse as tactical nukes and special forces. If we find bin laden and we need to send a bunker buster tactical nuke to assure his demise, perhaps we should do it. Or if we find the scumbag above ground lets capture the sob with special forces.
6. Recognition thatUS occupying armies for the most part in this conflict seem to have a negative impact.
7. Be prepared to secure the oil if necessary and be prepared to create ways to move the oil that dont involve pipelines thru what might amount to enemy territory. And as a corrallary find other sources of energy real fast and conserve as necessary to reduce the possiblity of a crisis in the next year or two.
