If you support everything Bush wants to do, you are "serious, concerned, responsible" - if you don't, you are an ignorant lightweight with no ideas or substance.

I think that you have two different usages of "serious" mixed up here.

What I was talking about and what I think was the context of the discussion was about the seriousness of the threat of terrorism. One side seems to believe that a critical mass of us are going to get blown up by terrorists and that anyone who doesn't react to that perspective on the threat is not taking the threat seriously. I've argued with enough people who believe what I think of as an exaggerated threat to conclude that their belief is earnest and sincere. Given that perspective, one can easily see how they would be distressed about those who not exercised over this horrific threat, not joining the fight against the enemy. And one can also easily see how they would consider folks who don't find the threat as serious as they do as, well, unserious.

That is different from the argument that the Dems do not have any ideas or substance. The Dems are in the difficult position of the opposition party. That feeds the basic perception, which may or may not be valid.
