In the current system the designer is obliged to also take on the role of investor no matter how unsuited he is for the task, or risk losing out in what turns out to be a zero-sum game of control over their own life and time.

We are all obligated to take on tasks for which we are unsuited. We all have to protect ourselves against predators even if we're weak or non-violent. We all have to do our taxes even if we're math impaired and detail averse. We all have to speak up for ourselves, even if we're shy. We all need to make good impressions, even if we're not attractive. We all have to learn something about the law an medicine and nutrition if we're to avoid pitfalls. Why is this any different? Or are all those fundamentally unfair, too, and require programs to compensate?
