Defense is one area that has to be assigned to the government. I expect the government to protect my basic human rights as well as my property rights, since capitalism relies on the rule of law and clear property rights.

As to trade, history is chock full of policies created by governments which have had enormous detrimental effects on economic progress and social welfare. The good news is that most of the barriers to cross border trade are disappearing even while the public clamors for more protection.

As to the government and education, the private sector has almost always provided superior institutions. People have voted with their feet on public education.
