We spent far more on defense in the past. The majority of government spending now is transfer payments from one set of individuals to another set of individuals.

In 2005 defense was 4% of GDP and 18.8% of Federal government outlays.

Payments to individuals were 12.2% of GDP and 61.4% of outlays.

In the year I was born, 1954:

Defense was 13.1% of GDP and 69.5% of Federal outlays.

Payments to individuals were 3.3% of GDP and 17.8% of outlays.
