Wars are now fought with computers, space vehicles and exotic materials and bio-warfare. The US government takes my money and yours and channels hundreds of billions of dollars into "research" -- including vast sums for the private schools you value so highly. When you were born, the government spent money on defense because we were attacked by Japan and entered a global war where millions upon millions of soldiers were deployed. Now we elect to fight wars and use relatively "light" troop deployments supported by an extraordinary array of "knowledge workers". In war as in other spheres, the government plays a key role in determining what knowledge development is worth funding, and takes our money and buys the best talent it can find to do the R&D. The world has changed Grace -- and good government matters more than ever.
