When you break the law...When you (for example) rape a child

If you raped a child you in a sense have a debt to that child and to society and would even if it was not illegal. The key concern here is not that you broke the law, but that you attacked and caused harm to someone else with no reasonably justification.

If you smoked a small amount of pot in the privacy of your home you would have no such debt even if it is against the law.
