"If you smoked a small amount of pot in the privacy of your home you would have no such debt even if it is against the law."

According to "we the people" you DO have such a debt to society. Firstly, you have the same onus to be a lawful citizen as others do--the failure of which creates a debt. Secondly, "we the people" have decided that dealing in an illegal and unsafe drug is unacceptable and impermissible. If you disagree, there is a lawful and democratic process through which you can argue your position. As in many of these disputatious matters, the public safety and welfare is invoked. Many think this goes beyond the Constitutional framework, at times--and perhaps some laws do. There is an alternative to being a lawful citizen and fighting for change democratically. One may become a subversive and rebel against society and the laws of society. It hardly needs to be added that I do not advocate the latter action.
