Ray Smith and Goldcorp in the 1980s in NZ cleaned out a lot of investors who had gold fever.

Just to be clear that Ray Smith isn't the Ray Smith that posts here. And no I do not have any relatives that I know about in NZ. But sounds an intriguing story.
