As horrible as communism turned out to be for generations of people it isn't easy to give up the illusion of a paternal state. The arguments for collectivism are directly emotional whereas the arguments for a free market system are indirect and logical. Even in places like the US where people have received the benefits of a free market system in spades there is a pervasive notion, especially among the educated, that collectivism is superior to capitalism even while real world experience has proven it to be a disaster.
