Peter, When I spent my time at Hazeldon, one of the statistics they talked about was the ethnic, or blood, groups that were the most likely to become alcoholics. The Irish were at the top of the list. Why that is so, if it is, I don't know. The American Indians were in second place. That stings me in two places.

In a few cases, intervention, confrontation, or tough love, can make a person think over his situation and realize the futility of what they are doing to themselves, but that is rare. In most cases, where a drunk is concerned, he gets angry that anyone, even his kin folk, would have the gall to question what he does, and will even drink more to show them who the boss is. But, he can't see that it is the booze that is the boss, and not him.
