The joys of multiculturalism! I don't know why groups, and it goes far beyond Muslims, think that it is our government's responsibility here to take sides in debates and conflicts that we have nothing to do with. The government's role is not to pander to the interests of Muslims, Jews, Christians, or any other group. The fact that so much fuss was made in the world over the publication of some cartoons (I actually saw them on a Belgian newsite and they weren't particularly artistic, clever or intentionally provocative) shows what a mess we threaten to get into encouraging new and different cultures to come here, segregate themselves in their communities, and express their differences. We cannot accomodate all cultures, all religions, all languages... it is simply not possible, and a road to ruin for us all. I think that we need one public school system for all, citizens capable of interacting in one of the official languages, and an understanding that our government is neutral in all foreign policy and only commits itself to aid, peace-keeping, and self-defence. |
