"AP: Sen. Reid helped Abramoff's clients"

Strange article. There is this part

But Abramoff's records show his lobbying partners billed for nearly two dozen phone contacts or meetings with Reid's office in 2001 alone.

Most were to discuss Democratic legislation that would have applied the U.S. minimum wage to the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory and an Abramoff client, but would have given the islands a temporary break on the wage rate, the billing records show.

Sounds like Reid was working with Abramoff's people to get the Mariana Islands a special deal, doesn't it? The reality is a lot different, Reid was co-sponsor of the bill that would require the Mariana Islands to set their minimum wage at US standards. The billing records reflect the attempts of Abramoff's partners to influence Reid. Given that the vote ws pretty much along party lines with Republicans opposing requiring the Mariana Islands to conform to US law, and Democrats, especially Reid, requiring conformity, it is hard to argue that Reid was Abramoff's puppet.

Not that I think Reid is clean, I don't. But tis isn't the issue.
