This is fairly old news -- this is from the San Jose Mercury News dated August 20:

"Ascend to supply network gear to Japan Internet. Ascend Communications Inc. received its biggest-ever order for frame relay or ATM equipment, said Hambrecht & Quist analyst Joe Noel. Noel said Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp. selected Alameda-based Ascend as the sole supplier of that networking equipment for its so-called Internet backbone, which will carry the bulk of all Internet traffic in Japan."
