Jimmy Carter ? Now you are getting close... I never said Mulroney fixed the economy... I said he gave the Liberals the tools Martin used to help balance the federal budget ... GST and Free Trade... but at a cost he never admitted... not once.. Are you listening? LOL... fresc... c'mon... the Cold War end wasn't like turning off a light switch man... most (me too) didn't even realise the financial implications that were to follow... think of all the money that went into the arms race ... using your very own examples from Carter.. Money, ideas and productivity slowly and inexorably turned away from the Pentagon (et al) and into consumer goodies.... tech boom... sound familiar ? Did it happen overnight ? Of course not.. Did Al Gore really invent the Internet ? Where am I going with all this ? Well I think lorne has been trying to tell you and I'm just giving you a bigger broader hint... The Liberals did not do it... The Conservatives did not do it.. it just happened... The best we can hope for from any government is good stewardship to manage what is happening and do some things to redistribute a portion of the wealth through limited taxation in the interest of the public good for *some* things like public healthcare, education, defense, infrastructure... which breeds stability and hence ultimately is good for all... Frankly I think it's deplorable with all the wealth generated during the 90s that the best the Liberals good do was rob the provinces to balance their budget... Doesn't impress me one bit, sorry. I'm absolutely sure Mr. Reagan had no idea just what a postive impact the Berlin Wall coming down would have. It was damn cool when he John Wayned the Air Traffic Controllers though :O) Al
