Las Cruces is the 2nd largest city in New Mexico but population is only about 85,000. That area was STILL part of Mexico until the Gadsen Purchase in I believe the late 1800's which smoothed out the border line between Mexico and USA. So, there is a large Mexican presence to this day and many old Mexican families. Old Mesila was where Billy the Kid was captured and tried, at one time it was THE big town and the headquarters of the old Overland Stage Coach line but the RR went through Las Cruces and Mesila never grew, its STILL THERE to this day and on the outskirts of Las Cruces which has now grown right to the border of Mesila. The courthouse where Billy was tried is now a little store that sells trinkets. jdn

ps: Las Cruces is the Chili Pepper capital of the world (I love chili peppers) and as to mexican food, they have lots of it many restaurants very good. It also is the home of the University of New Mexico.
