I gather that you live in Jefferson Parish, which, in my opinion, doesn't really count when talking about Katrina or Rita.
You gather wrong.
I am now literally a stone's throw from Audubon Park, and before that lived in the heart of the Garden District, a stone's throw away from Commander's Palace. Along with old wines and old cigars and beautiful courtyards, I like old houses in beautiful neighborhoods, a fact that luckily kept me out of the bottom of the flooded bowl.
There is something to be said for adopting the tastes of our forefathers--old wine is terrific, old cigars too, and old houses, at least around here, are built on the best protected property. Not something I consciously did, but intelligence, cunning, and wisdom, like God, work in mysterious ways.
And Jefferson Parish does count. Why shouldn't it? There was a lot of flooding in Jefferson Parish. Sure, it didn't result from breached levees, but I don't think the victims think such nice distinctions matter. And there was also a lot of windstorm damage, in which FEMA was involved. Jefferson Parish was and is a major part of the reconstruction. |
