At this point, my first choice is McCain. His brand of conservatism, and he is a conservative, holds a lot of appeal for me. If elected, he would probably bring Hagel into his administration. The article mentioned the position of Secretary of State, though I think that the DOD would be more appropriate. McCain appears to have made his peace with the Bush people. It has been reported that his Chief of Staff now meets regularly with Karl Rove.
Giuliani has not yet made a decision, though he is traveling the country and testing the waters. By all accounts, the GOP faithful have given him a positive reception. Even Bob Novak has had some nice things to say about him. However, I don't know if that will translate into primary votes. If I had to put money down on his candidacy, I would bet that he will not run. He seems to be enjoying his consulting business and I am sure that he is making a lot of money. Does he really want to disclose all of his clients? He is also carrying a fair amount of baggage and there may still be a few more Kerik's in the closet. Having said that, Rudy would be more than acceptable to me. I'm not looking for a saint.
Frist is DOA. No charisma, no mission. Also, holding the position of Senate Majority Leader is a political dead end.
Brownback will run on the far right, but will not get any traction.
George Allen will be the establishment candidate. Anyone for a McCain-Allen ticket? That would cover a lot of bases.
Biden should have run in 2004. I have always felt that Kerry is Biden-Light.
Warner could be formidable, though he is going to have to survive the Clinton grinder. We may find out that he is a charter member of the right wing conspiracy.
Kerry will take a pass, primarily because nobody will give him any money. American Spirit will be severely disappointed.
Wesley Clark may run, but he is better suited for the VP slot. I personally don't like him. Too robotic for my taste. Did you bump into him in your prior life? Clark is also making a lot of money and may have some disclosure issues. He recently pulled down 75,000 shares for adding his name to the prospectus of one of the blank check IPOs.
