Long term in Last Mile Techs = Semi's ?

I'd like some info on which chip companies are leading the technology curve to supply components for last mile tech's such as XDSL and cablemodem's. I know of Analog Devices, Level One and Motorola.....

Anybody have a better list ?

IMHO the long term play in this sector is to select the component suppliers. I believe these technologies will be very successfull however, I think it is unlikely that any of the companies such as Amati, Aware, Westell etc. will be around in their present form after the larger Bell, Internetworking, Modem and Cable companies begin competing with them when "off the shelf" chips become available. Even if you disagree the winners will be the chip companies as it will not matter who they are selling to.

As a short term investor I do think these are good places to be as the smaller technology companies determine the technology direction, generate their initial revenues and then enter into technology buyouts and take overs from the larger companies.

I'm new to SI and am pleased to see the excellent dicussions threads such as this.

Thnx Mike
