That was exactly the word that came to my mind. Pets.

People adopt for so many reasons- but often it is to fill certain needs of their own. If these are nurturing and healthy- great. Sadly, we (in social services) saw cases where the needs were unhealthy or expectations unrealistic.

Of course, there are people who really do have a "calling for kids"-- sometimes their willingness to give is incomprehensible even to those of us who love children.

These children need homes, and if these people provide loving ones, then do we want to delve too deeply into the motivation?
I have always thought that much "unselfish service" is still selfish, which is fine, as long as the the needs match up. Hopefully, this is one of those situations.
