I didn't get this out the article at all. They are deploying Netscape and Microsoft browsers on the NT desktops, according to the article, but it doesn't mention what products they are using for email. It gives some hints, however: it's part of the Defense Messaging System, allows Web-based client access, supports IMAP4 protocol, supports an X.500 directory, uses native TCP/IP, incorporates strong encryption, and doesn't use or require ActiveX. The only messaging product I know of that meets those requirements is GroupWise DMS.

Using Cisco hardware for routing has nothing to do with Microsoft's vaporware directory services.

There was another interesting article in the series that you didn't link to: AT&T winning the contract for remote access. As you may know, AT&T uses NDS to manage access and security in their private network services, and Novell gets paid for every user account that AT&T has.
