The size of the population being sampled (unless it is very small) does not affect the accuracy of the poll.

1,006 people out of 300,000,000 certainly doesn't seem to be a large sample.

The accuracy would be the same if 1006 people were sampled from a population of 30,000,000 or 3,000,000. Also, there isn't much to gain in accuracy by increasing the sample size. For example, if the sample size is increased from 1000 to 2000 the margin of error decreases from 3.2% to 2.2%. (Margin of error is easily calculated by taking the reciprocal of the square root of the sample size)

If you wish to know the details of how the population is randomly sampled you could browse around on Gallop's site www.gallop.com
