07:44 AMAT Applied Materials: January Quarter Earnings Preview - Thomas Weisel (19.86 )

Thomas Wiesel expects AMAT to meet or beat their January quarter revenue and EPS estimates of $1.79bn and $0.17 (excluding options expense), respectively, when they report after the close on Wednesday, Feb 15. The firm expects January quarter orders to meet or exceed their conservative estimate of $1.91bn and exceed the high end of guidance. Robust peer trends suggest upside to April quarter order guidance: The firm expects AMAT to guide April quarter orders up 15% q/q to $2.2bn. The firm also expects April quarter revenue and EPS guidance to meet or beat their current estimates of $1.92bn and $0.21 (excluding stock options expense). Based on recent positive end-market datapoints (low 4Q05 inventories and strong retail sales data), they see upside to their April quarter estimates. The firm continues to believe that AMAT will enjoy 5-6 quarters of sequential positive order growth, supporting their above-the-Street FY07 revenue growth estimate of $9.27bn. The firm notes the stock's attractive valuation, trading at a N.T.M. P/E ratio of 22x versus 35x for the semi cap peer group. Based on their N.T.M. sales per share estimate of $4.99, AMAT shares trade at a forward price-to-sales multiple of 4.0x, above the peer group average of 2.7x.
