The MacBook Pro has been injected with a bit more CPU speed, even before it has been released. Apple today has announced [ apple.com ] that the base model of the MacBook Pro will ship with a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor, up from 1.67GHz, and the top-end model will incorporate a 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo processor, up from 1.83GHz.
In addition, the 2.0GHz model can now be bumped up to 2.16GHz as an extra-cost build-to-order option when purchasing direct from Apple (we're not clear on whether the 2.16GHz processor version will be available if the computer is purchased elsewhere).
An Apple press release [ apple.com ] indicates that the 2.0GHz MacBook Pro will begin shipping this week, and the 1.83GHz model will begin shipping next week. Customers who have pre-ordered either the base or top-end MacBook Pro will receive the corresponding faster CPU version automatically.
