I have a hunting fiend friend who's cooks up birds for friends sometimes. It's not unusual to find a piece of birdshot in the meat but it's not riddled with birdshot. The birds usually aren't hit full on with bird shot and some of it must pass through the bird.

It would be interesting to know the spread of birdshot on the guy that Cheney shot. If you knew that and the type of shell that he used you could get a pretty good estimate of the distance of the shot.

Every news report I've seen talks about how the guy should have warned Cheney when he approached. It seems to me that if you have the gun in your hand and there are only three guys in your party, you don't shoot at ground level unless you know where all three guys are. Especially when you're pulling a half circle and shooting behind yourself.

All the talk about how it's not unusual to get peppered with birdshot while bird hunting fails to recognize the difference between having spent birdshot rain down on you from a distant shot and getting "knocked silly" by the force of a close in shot.

The news media repeats the spin like trained monkeys. Ed
