I have no expectation that the US image will improve in the Muslim world in this presidency.

Agree, especially if OBL is captured or killed as he eventually will be. He will be more powerful dead than alive. Might be a reason he's still alive.

The Crusade gaffe immediately after 9/11 didn't ease Muslim paranoia, though it was innocent.

Our foreign policy has not been as deft as it could be, for sure, especially with the Europeans during the runup to the war. Rumsfeld and Co. were deliberately incendiary, and that was wrong.

On the other hand, how does one deal with fanatics with nuclear ambitions occupying the seats of power in Iran? Mollycoddle them? An approach to moderate Iranians under the circumstances as the sole response would be foolish in the extreme.

People like Arafat who were not only terrorists but corrupt to the core?

The Saudis, who take our cash and use it against us?

Warning the Muslim fanatics and threatening retaliation is the only way to deal with them, but doing so inevitably corrodes the strength of our "soft" power with the moderates. A devil's bargain.

There have been military mistakes, too. Failure to use enough troops in Iraq initially was penny wise, pound foolish.

But not all is doom and gloom: we have not had a domestic terror incident since 9/11; the Europeans are seemingly behind us on Iran; we bounced back from the effects of 9/11; the Taliban is essentially history; the Iraqis and the Afghanis have had their elections, as we promised them; and our military has done very well
