As a rule the bird is only hit by one or two BBs. They can be dug out either before cooking or after. The biggest worry is chipping a tooth on one.

I have eaten probably 500 critters shot with a shotgun and did swallow 3 BBs, found them in the toilet after flushing a day or two later.
