THROW DEEP! Back in the 1980's Kenny Stabler was the great left-handed throwing quarterback for the Oakland Raiders. In an interview with Stabler (whose nickname was Snake) a sportswriter asked the him to comment on the personal creed of the north- country novelist Jack London. The reporter read: "I would rather be ashes than dust. I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze Than it should be stifled by dry rot. I would rather be a meteor, every atom in me a magnificent glow Than a sleepy, permanent planet. The proper function of a human being is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time." "How does that credo strike you, Mr. Stabler?" asked the reporter. After a long pause Stabler replied in two splendid football words: "THROW DEEP!"
