Ish, re: "The guy was supposed to be even with the other two and had fallen behind to retrieve a bird. Normally shooting behind the line is ok."

There are a lot of things about this that don't make sense. If there were three of them in hunting in the brush and the third guy was somewhere out of sight behind them, why did he turn and shoot without knowing where that guy was? Is it "normally" ok to shoot behind you in that circumstance?

If Whittington was so far away that the shot didn't do much more than "break the skin," why is it that the guy got "knocked silly" and now has a silent heart attack because at least one pellet was embedded in his heart?

The importance of this incident is not that Cheney accidently shot a hunting companion; that was a mistake in judgement and we are all guilty of lapses in judgement, although when handling guns we're usually a lot less likely to be careless.

What is important, however, is that this episode may confirm that in Cheney's eyes the truth is whatever you can convince the public to swallow. That's a "moral compass" indicator that shakes our trust in our leadership and makes us wonder what they really mean when they "assure" us that programs like the NASA surveillance program are not infringing on the rights of Americans, or that we're not "torturing," or that we didn't abuse wmd intelligence to make a false case for war, or that we're defeating the insurgents in Iraq or that.....

I expect that with the latest information concerning Whittington's health this incident will be looked at more closely. If Cheney's people have tried to whitewash it then we'll see a lot of smoke. Ed
