I don't really think the issue is that of the V.P. being a butterfingers hunter; I've known more than my share of reckless gun wielders, both in the military and civilian side. Accidents do happen, unfortunately. A timely, forthcoming report by the involved public servant would likely have been accepted by the passive American people as an unfortunate coincidental situation - at least that is how I would have viewed it.
I feel the issue is the total disregard for proper protocol with law enforcement which hints at a privileged cover-up. In the big picture, it only really sucks to be the 78 year old duck, and I could care less if he accidentally shot his entire crew. What does bother me is the "2nd in command" elected public official engaging in what appears to be an attempt to avoid discloser of an unfortunate incident (if not an intentional cover-up situation).

In an administration which is currently having credibility problems, this was simply a poorly executed response to an otherwise insignificant event.
