Since Cheney was on private property, the police would have been at a distance. They should have been allowed access to the scene and witnesses later to determine if any crime was committed. But let's be realistic, the odds are 99% it was a stupid hunting accident that the VP's office handled badly.

It's not like there were any Democratic senators in the hunting party for Cheney to aim at accidentally.
