If it were me that had pulled the trigger in the same circumstance, I would be close to despondent over the incident. I might be wishing I could take my friends place in the hospital bed. The fact that it is international news in Chenney's case raises that bar tremendously. Maybe he can just shrug it off and has no worry except how to handle the media. Personally, I don't get that thinking.

"So lighten up a bit, open a cold one and have a laugh at dick's expense."

That just doesn't work for me. Sorry.

"I remember a certain dress the right couldnt let go of.

It was never the dress for me. I took Bill's finger wagging episode as a personal betrayal. When I found out about other women whom he had victimized via the authority of his office, I was outraged. When I learned that his calm and charming dimeaner lacked authenticity because he believed he could outwit anyone in a persuasive argument, I was disappointed. His attempts to manipulate the justice system were appauling. When I saw him willing to cash in the integrity of the social movements of the previous decades for the sake of his personal legacy, I became embittered. As I watched left wing institutions (like N.O.W) sacrificed on the alter of bill's power, I was dumb founded (I blame left wingers for that more than Bill).

Sorry, but for me the dress represented a door that opened my eyes to the character and betrayals of Bill Clinton, whom I had supported up until that time. This is something far different than an accident in which Chenney hurt his friend. I do see how the two are comparable as purely political strategem.
