A couple of things about that interview were interesting. One is that Hume asked about their relationship and Cheney classified him as an acquaintance, not a close one, but then referred to him as a friend throughout the rest of the interview.

Hume asked if there was any drinking and he said not.

Also, the incident took place in the early evening, which makes his meeting with the police the next morning more plausible. If it took an ambulance an hour to get to the hospital, the ranch must be a long way from nowhere.
