Zincman,

I always go by weight of the pellet load, but I only shoot sporting targets and never animals/birds. If I recall, my 7 1/2 shot has about 300 pellets and #8 between 350-500 (depending on what kind of load, i.e. sport, bird).

I would say 400 is my best average/guess for a #8.

Someone who shoots quail might have a better answer.
