Teles sues Nokia for VoIP patent violation

German telco Teles claims that the Nokia 6136 violates, by means of its 'GSM fallback' functionality, Teles' German and European VoIP patents, and has launched a respective patent violation case with the Landgericht Mannheim. The Finnish handset maker Nokia has presented the 6136, its neweset WLAN/GSM handset, at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona.

Concerning its German and European VoIP patents, Teles intends to launch further short term patent infringement cases against some providers of VoIP products with 'line-switching fallback' functionality for fixed and/or mobile networks. These advanced VoIP products use the packet switching internet as the primary telecoms network and hand a call over to a line-switching network only occasionally (e.g. if the quality of the internet communication is poor). Teles claims that this techonlogy vioaltes its VoIP patents it has held since 1996.

Concerning its US VoIP patent and the same providers of VoIP products, Teles will likewise proceed in the US. The telco has entered into business relations with three law firms in Washington, DC to pursue these cases.
