Quail hunting accidents are routine as it is a close shot bird that is very fast on the rise and in speed. It generally flushes at a low angle close to ground, so you have to shoot close to ground and quickly. Coveys are all over the place and parties often get confused who are hunting an area as to where the other party is.

US hunting accidents and fatalities outnumber CDN by a large factor. This is because American gun handling is much less stringently taught and much more careless. Many CDN's refuse to hunt with US hunters because they don't seem to care which way the barrel points. You can always tell a CDN hunter by the way in which he treats the ordinary direction of the barrel and what he is shooting at with great meticulousness. CDN hunting safety courses are very basic and stringent. I have observed this about US hunters and heard it from other hunters frequently. If I ever see the barrel of a gun pass in my direction from another hunter's control, I stop hunting with that person immediately and retire from the field. No exceptions. I would advise the US administration and the States to revise and overhaul their hunting laws and gun safety regulations in general and to train their military in a better manner, similar to the CDN military training which seens to have ingrained the better practices of CDN's in the population at large.

Vis a vis the political situation, yes, they seem eager to find fault. It is not the responsibility of the Veep to sound off on every incident to satisfy the standards of the newshounds. The issue of the condition of the victim was not addressed but may be significant as to what to announce and whether it would aggravate the situation and his condition if he did.
