Actually, you're more of a "communist" than any of them. You openly promote a crackdown on privacy and civil liberties, as well as free speech and the free press. Because that's that McCarthyism is, that's exactly what it is. McCarthyism is pro rightwing dictatorship. Which is similar to a communist military dictatorship. All military dictatorships become rightwing, including those who call themselves communist, because they take away the rights of their people.
Communist governments are different from what was 50 years ago known as "socialism" or "communism" in labor camps, union halls and Bohemian and intellectual circles.
Like I said, Johnny Cash grew up on a communal farm project in Arkansas. Each family for 20 acres, a house and a mule, and worked hard. All their profits were combined to pay for the town, roads and services. This is pure communism and there's nothing wrong with it, though it shouldn't be forced on anyone. It's also similar to the hippie commune model.
The communism that was a threat to the USA in the 50's was Soviet bloc communism. That turned out to be more like fascism, a perversion of communism, more like a rightwing police state dictatorships where the workers had no rights at all. Nobody who McCarthy was harrassing believed in police states. They believed in freedom and human rights.
Ironically, it was McCarthy himself who believed in the police state, and a quasi military dictatorship. So he was the one who was a threat to American democracy. Just like Bushies are now.
The real un-American creep was McCarthy. And none of those artists and intellectuals and workingclass families and other good people he harrassed were any threat to the USA whatsoever. They were however a threat to rightwing extremism taking over our government, the kind Eisenhower also warned us about, the military-big oil-industrial fat cat CEO complex, the Cheney types, the real evil-doers. |
