I don't find Toensing credible. She and her husband, name escapes me, are among the most highly ideological of the pundits.
I'm not averse to these kinds of stories but they would have to come from some sort of credible source. A much more professional one. Paul Pillar would have been one but I gather he's not talking on these issues or, most likely, wasn't among the inner circles on them.
As for Toensing's specific comments, some one else writing about these same incidents would, at a minimum, need to include commentary from FISA judges as well.
Moreover, as I read it, the structure of the argument is simply to blame Gore, the Dems, etc. for all the problems. Not a trustworthy piece.
Since trust is a commodity not available, I can only see completely open discussions before congress about corrections as the best of a bunch of bad alternatives. And, even then, in the old Reagan formulation, it would require verification in order to substantiate the "trust." That is, data and narrative would have to be substantiated by independent parties. |
