VP Cheney Serves The Nation, Again
-- DJ Drummond PoliPundit.com
Wow, the MSM press sure hates Dick Cheney. One might imagine it rivals their hatred of President Bush, were such a thing possible. But it serves the nation, this mindless screaming inside the Beltway, because it displays to all of America just how completely out-of-touch with reality the MSM, especially the White House Press Corps, has become, and will drive even more people to find a better balance of opinion and better priority of news, which means even higher numbers for blogs and the talk shows. Yet somehow I think that more people will call in to Limbaugh than to Air America, and more people will look up, say, Polipundit, than Daily Koff. But hey, maybe that’s just me.
Let me be clear, that Cheney’s accidental shooting of his friend Harry Whittington is an unfortunate personal accident. But we need to emphasize all three of those words. Nobody died, and Mr. Whittington is going to be fine. It happened during a hunting trip, when people often carry guns, it was far from any major city, it happened at a relatively far distance where gun accidents are concerned, it involved birdshot rather than the heavier buckshot (hence the name) or slug projectile. And it was an accident, involving no animus or intent to harm Mr. Whittington. Here in Texas we understand that sort of thing; apparently Washington D.C. considers it irregular for anyone but muggers to be armed, much less to shoot for sport.
The distinction (and clear hypocrisy) between Cheney’s situation and certain others lies in these points. For example, Ted Kennedy’s delay in notifying anyone about his car accident at Chappaquiddick may reasonably be said to have contributed to the death of Mary Jo Kopechne; there certainly is no question that in Kennedy’s accident, his friend died as a direct result of his error. In the case of Harry Reid’s stroke (which was not announced for several days, as opposed to the half-day Cheney delayed), it was a serious and personal incapacity which directly addressed the question of Reid’s ability to serve in his position. Nothing Dick Cheney said or did after the shooting did anything to put Whittington at greater risk or prevent the function of his role as Vice-President. Yet the MSM press mindlessly screams their outrage.
Dr. Bennett Tuesday morning, and Hugh Hewitt yesterday afternoon, both touched on the real offense perceived by the MSM press – the story was there to be reported, at whatever level the paper or station found appropriate, but it required the reporters to get off their butts and do their jobs. The gist of the White House Press Corps hissy fit, is that no one from the White House did their job for them. Heck hath no fury like an overpaid slacker at the Washington Post, apparently. And there we see the value of Dick Cheney. Simply by being who he is, the Vice-President has once again revealed the dirty laundry which is the MSM’s daily wardrobe.
