Hawk--time for the timetable. Kristoff in NYT who is a liberal but an open minded and fair one, says out by end of 2007.

As attractive a proposition as you might think it is, for us to dictate when we think "we're ready" to leave is a sure set-up for failure in Iraq. It would provide some of the corrupt or Iranian/Syrian influenced parties the excuse to permit the government to collapse and pave the way for all-out civil war. And ALL OF THE BLAME would easily be laid upon the US for "abandoning" Iraq.

We need to continue to OFFER our presence in Iraq until the government ASKS us to leave. Our presence there as an "honest broker" as well as a party to "stiffen their spines" when the chips are down, is crucial, IMO.

But the minute they ask us to leave, we should.

That way, if things collapse, we can assert that we did what we could and the responsibility for an collapse of the Iraqi government would rest upon the shoulders of the country's leadership.
