I think they just skew stupid and salacious. I found the news coverage in the UK and in France much more international and much more intellectual- and the dumbed down soundbite was less in evidence (not that there weren't some stupid programs in the UK- I'm only saying that I found more of substance there, than here, in the US.) But then our PBS is no match for the BBC- and it's the BBC that had the most intelligent commentary. Obviously we all know about the mistakes the BBC has made, but a few mistakes don't alter the fact that the intelligence on display there, makes us in the US look like a bunch of ignorant hicks- which, if you look at our knowledge (collectively) of geography, and geopolitical issues, we pretty much are- though I'm sure almost everyone in America could tell you ALL about the OJ trial. Just shows what we in the US think is important.

If the consumer wants pointless salacious stories I'm not sure it makes the media liberal or conservative to give them that- it makes them a business- which is the problem with running your news like a business.
