The reason I did some testing was due to some personal doubts about the penetration factor at 30 yards, plus someone had posted a site that tried to put the distance at 10 feet. Just for giggles, I opened one of 20 gauge shells(yes I know the gauge and shot were different) with 7/8 oz. of #6 shot and counted 183 pellets. Anyway, the following sums up how it went.

Just in from doing my own little shotgun pattern test. Using low brass 2 3/4 inch 20 gauge shells with #6 shot(because that was what was handy) at the approximate 30 yard range. My target was a water filled gallon milk jug....The jug was fully covered with shot in a fairly uniform pattern, 20 pellets didn't penetrate the back side, at least that many went all the way through. My conclusion is...it would have stunned and knocked a healthy young man on his butt and probably worse on one pushing 80.

The ten foot shot resulted in a rectangular solid hole through both sides that measured roughly 1"x2". Surely fatal in a vital area with massive tissue damage.

I owe the VP an apology for having any doubts about the penetration factor at 30 yards.

I know water isn't a perfect bullet stop, but neither is human skin and flesh. The man is very lucky not to have lost an eye.
